European Initiative for the Euro+Med PlantBase
Objective (proposal abstract)
The project will develop a state-of-the-art information system for European
and Mediterranean plants. A major output will be a catalogue of European plants
with synonyms, based on consensus taxonomy, for a wide range of EU users with an
unambiguous source of information for its biodiversity commitments. The project
builds on the experience of the successful Flora Europaea approach: a consensus
taxonomy by involvement of a network of specialists throughout the area. It will
start from the electronic data set of the ESF European Documentation System,
upgrade and apply new software for comparing datasets, revise and extend
coverage to all recognized taxa, develop additional verified data for
conservationists, ecologists and other distribution, mapping, conservation
status, genetic resources and karyology, together with links to other databases.
The BGBM is responsible for the software development workpackage,
specifically for the development of a taxonomic remote editor for the Euro+Med
database (specification).
