Purpose: This Symposium is a continuation of a series of international meetings on lichen biology, which started in Berlin 1969, and continued in Bristol 1974, Münster 1986 (IAL 1), London 1989, Madrid 1990, Lund 1992 (IAL 2) and Salzburg 1996 (IAL 3). It aims to bring together students and scientists from different fields such as morphology, physiology, ecology, chemistry and classic and molecular systematics in order to extend our knowledge of the lichenized fungi.

Second Announcement: If you are interested in receiving further information on the symposium please return the reply form (see www.bio.ub.es/ial2000.htm) before September 1999. The second announcement will be distributed during February 2000.

Scientific Program: The symposium will include scientific sessions, contributed symposia and poster sessions. The scientific program has been tentatively divided into eight different sections and four contributed symposia: Sections: A. - Systematics of the Mycobiont; B.- Photobionts; C.- Morphology and Structure; D.- Ecology and Ecophysiology; E.- Mediterranean and Xerophilous Lichen Diversity and Biogeography; F.- Lichen-dominated Communities; G.- Populations and Thallus Individuality; H.- Lichenicolous Fungi. Contributed Symposia: 1.- Bioindication by Lichens of Stability and Stress in Ecosystems; 2.- Storage and Retrieval of Lichen Data: Publications, Herbaria, Checklists, Floras; 3.- Strategies for the Sustainable Use of Lichen Biodiversity; 4.- Molecular Approach to Lichen Phylogeny.

Treasurer's Report

The delay in sending the last issue of the Newsletter (vol. 31,2) was due to a strike in Hungary in January 1999. This, and the increase of postal costs resulted in a worse financial situation of the IAL. Practically no increase is shown in the balance, if we subtract the mailing costs of the present issue. There is now US$ 8,400 accumulated on the IAL accounts in Hungary and the US. The cumulative sum of more than US$ 10,000, reported in ILN 31, 2, never existed. Many members have not yet payed until 2000. Former members who have received issues of the Newsletter during the last two years, are kindly requested to pay the membership fee of US$ 40 for 1997-2000. Members who joined the Association at any time during the last 2 years will receive (or have already received) all issues from 1997 (Vol.30, nrs.1, 2, 1997; Vol. 31, nrs.1, 2, 1998). Please, let me know if you have not received them! Lichenologists who have decided to join the Association can choose to pay in full (US$ 40 for the entire 4 years period - 1997-2000), and then they'll receive also the back issues. If they choose becoming a member only from January 1st 1999, the fee is of US$ 20. New members should contact the Treasurer to register. We need your name, institution, street, town, country, fax, e-mail and telephone. Please send any changes as soon as possible. Submit all unpaid membership dues before 15 August 1999! The following options are available:
