"Usnea" from: Anonymous: Herbolario Volgare, nel quale si dimostra a conoscer le herbe etc., Venezia, 1536. - One of the earliest representations of a lichen - actually it represents an Usnea - taken from the second edition of a book originally written in Latin. Its origin is certainly earlier: a very similar drawing is present in a Herbarius written in Dutch, and published in Louvain in 1484; both of them have a faint resemblance with the earliest known drawing of a lichen (which was not any better), dating back to the year 1512, and probably originating from Byzanthium; for further information see Richardson D.H.S. 1974: The Vanishing Lichens.
