First of all I wish to thank those who have taken the trouble to fill in the questionnaires, who attended our meetings, and participated in discussions or contributed in other ways to develop the concept of a Biological Collection Information Service.

Special thanks goes to Carlos Martínez, the Scientific Officer at DG XII responsible for the project, who helped us in various ways.

Without the steady and active support of Sylvia Steinmann we would have succumbed to the administrative overhead a project like BioCISE brings with it. In this context, the considerable support of the BGBM's administrative staff (Regina Katlewski, Gisela Niemann-Wildung, Marlies Youssef and Egon Brüning) should not go unnoticed.
In the preparation of this publication, I wish to acknowledge the help of Andrea Hahn and Anton Güntsch gave me as well as the proofreading done by Bettina Pfeiffer-Berendsohn and several of the project's members. Michael Rodewald and Ingo Haas assisted in the preparation of the graphics. W. Winderlich of the Photosatzwerkstatt should be mentioned for the patience he mustered.

BioCISE Resource Identification was a Concerted Action Project funded by the European Commission, DG XII, in the Biotechnology Programme, contract no. BIO4-97-2309.
