The Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência is a leading research institute dedicated to fundamental problems in Biology. Created in 1966 by the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian as a private, independent research facility, it is presently undergoing major restructuring changes concerning the use of lab space by scientists with short term projects in the Bio-Medical area and houses several resources of unique value to the national scientific community, including the Portuguese EMBnet node, a Library of 140 Biology periodicals, and an Animal House. Research is supported by a Bioinformatics Unit, a Genetic Engineering Unit, a Genetic Therapy Unit, and a Morphology and Cell Imaging Unit. It provides postgraduate teaching in monographic courses and a PhD program.
