The responsible scientist, Gregor Hagedorn (Dipl. Biol.) works at the Institute for Plant virology, Microbiology and Biological Safety since 1992. He investigates DNA sequences of fungi, and researches the possibility of an automatical diagnostic system based on a database of DNA-sequence data. Besides his research tasks, Mr. Hagedorn is responsible for the development and administration of the systematic, literature, and culture collection databases of the institute. The MINOS application developed by Hagedorn for these purposes over the past years was modified according to the results of the CDEFD project, in which Hagedorn played an important role. MINOS integrates and interconnects the various information areas (taxonomy, bibliography, and strain-related information). The application is designed as an extensible, language independent structure, customisable partly by normal users and fully by the local database administrator. A part of the Minos project has been publicly released in the form of "DeltaAccess, an SQL interface to Delta, implemented in Microsoft Access". The design objective was to create a working tool as natural to the scientist as a word processor.
