BioCISE project member

Prof. Pier Luigi Nimis started his academic career as a co-worker of Prof. S. Pignatti within the framework of the National Data Bank for the Italian Flora and Vegetation. He has published extended accounts on the quantitative phytogeography of Sicily, based on the outputs of this bank. Later on, Prof. Nimis pursued his interests in the field of computer-aided phytogeography, organising the data bank on the lichens of Italy and that on the phytogeographical data. The latter includes the distributional patterns of vascular plant species at world level, organised in a grid of Operational Geographic Units; this Bank has been used to investigate the phytogeography of Italian forest vegetation, and is presently being enlarged to include also meadow species. A similar bank is being constructed in collaboration with the Siberian Central Botanical Garden of Novosibirsk (Russia), within an international project for the phytogeographic study of Siberia, directed by Prof. Nimis (Trieste) and L. Malyshev (Novosibirsk).

Prof. Nimis, formerly Dean of the Biology Faculty, is presently Director of the Department of Biology of the University of Triest, Head of the Geobotany Section, and Preseident of the Italian Lichen Society.
