Born 1964. University studies at the University of Ulm (Diploma 1990, PhD 1994) and the University of Bayreuth (Habilitation 2001). 1995-1998 Postdoc at the University of Ulm; 1998 Visiting Professor at the Federal University of Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil; 1998-2001 Research Assistant at the University of Bayreuth; 2001-2015 Collections Manager & Adjunct Curator (Lichens & Fungi) at the Field Museum, Chicago; since 2010 Affiliate Faculty at George Mason Uni¬versity, Virginia, since 2013 Fulbright Specialist Roster; since 2015 Curator (Cryptogams) at Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem, Free University of Berlin, and Research Associate at the Field Museum, Chicago.

Research interests 
  • Taxonomy, phylogeny, systematics, ecology, biogeography and uses of tropical lichens, with emphasis on basidiolichens, foliicolous lichens, Gomphillaceae, Graphidaceae, Hygrophoraceae, Lobariaceae, Pilocarpaceae, Trypetheliaceae
  • Evolution of fungi including comparative molecular clock studies
  • Phylogenetic methods (ambiguous region coding, weighted bootstrapping, homoplasy, integration of morphological and molecular data)
  • Species delimitation and mining of next-generation sequencing data to assess fungal species richness
  • Remote assessment of accuracy of taxonomic identifications in biodiversity repositories
