Welcome to the Index Seminum Berolinensis website
In 1825, the first Index Seminum Berolinensis was published, containing a simple list of 828 species. Today, two hundred years later, we offer you a convenient way to order seeds online with a targeted search for scientific names, country of origin and full-text search, as well as the option to filter by wild and garden origins.
The exchange of wild seeds has always been the most important way for botanical gardens around the world to build, supplement or renew their plant collections. Whereas in the past it was mainly the costs that made expeditions to faraway countries extremely expensive, today there are completely different challenges: for good reasons, the collection of plants as well as export and import are subject to numerous national and international restrictions and regulations. Nature conservation laws, phytosanitary regulations, the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing, export and import restrictions and customs rules must be observed. With the International Plant Exchange Network (IPEN), botanical gardens make seed exchange transparent and traceable in accordance with national and international legal regulations.
