August 2004 Der dänische Künstler Bent Johnsen, Jahrgang 1919 und Absolvent der Königlich Dänischen Kunstakademie, ist nicht nur in seiner Heimat berühmt für seine botanischen Illustrationen. Er schuf die Abbildungen für beide Bände der “Mountain Flora of Greece”, entwarf Logos für viele botanische Institute und Gesellschaften und brachte 1983 eine Briefmarkenserie für den WWF heraus. 1996 erhielt der Künstler den “Jill Smythies Prize for botanical illustration” der Linnean Society in London. Seine Aquarelle für “Endemic plants of Greece – the Peloponnese” werden in der Galerie des Botanischen Museums erstmals in Deutschland gezeigt. Ihre ästhetische Qualität, gepaart mit wissenschaftlicher Akribie im Detail, spricht für sich selbst. Bent Johnsen is universally recognized as an able and gifted botanical illustrator. Born in Copenhagen in 1919, he has studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts and is a member of the Artists’ Society. Besides his painting he has made botanical illustrations for numerous scientific books and journals. He has taught plant drawing at the Botanical Institute, University of Copenhagen. Both volumes of Mountain Flora of Greece were illustrated by him. Several logos for botanical institutions and societies have also been designed by him and 1983 saw the issue of a sheet of stamps specially commissioned by WWF. His book “Orchids of Scandinavia” first published in 1994 and subsequently reprinted, contains illustrations of plants prepared in their natural habitat. He was awarded the Jill Smythies Prize for botanical illustration by the Linnean Society, London in 1996. The exceptionally fine aquarelles in “Endemic plants of Greece – the Peloponnese” are now exhibited for the first time in Germany and speak for themselves. His illustrations are not only aesthetically pleasing but also accurate in structural detail. |
