Valerian is an up to 2 m tall, rhizomatous perennial herb, with white to pinkish cymes/corymbs. Its distribution area comprises vast ranges of Europe, Russia and western Asia, where it thrives predominantly on damp soil throughout a wide variety of habitats. The medicinal drug consists of the dried underground organs („valerian roots“) of the plant. Their volatile oils, Alkaloids und Iridoids act sedative and anticonvulsant. It is often prescribed as a remedy against insomnia. The volatile oils are also responsible for the typical odor of valerian, following the desiccation of the drug.
